The Virgin Islands are divided into two parts, the American
Virgin Islands (USVI) and the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Generally all the islands are magnificient and breathtaking.
They are also a favourite destination for sailors and cruiseship
passengers. The islands are actually volcanic in nature and
therefore towered up by rocky hills.
The main USVI are St. Thomas, St. John and the less visi-
ted, but beautiful island of St. Croix. They were bought up
from Denmark in 1917, which they possessed over more than
250 years. A good deal! The USVI are far more visited than the
BVI. The capital on St. Thomas is Charlotte Amalie and with
more than 6 cruise ships a day quiet busy. The island is also
known as "Nightclub of the Virgin Islands"! You should not
miss to visit Fort Christian, Blackbeard´s Castle, Coral
World which will give you a great idea of the underwater
world, the 99 steps and the Goverment House from 1867.
From Paradise Point you have a great view over the island
and the capital Charlotte Amalie. Best beach on St. Thomas
is the famous Magens Bay. The beach is quiet busy but has
changing facilities and picnic tables.
Smallest among the main islands is the rather quiet and rela-
xing St. John. Magnificent beaches can be found on every is-
land, but on St. John the beaches are amazing. Around two
third of the island is protected as National Park.
On St. Croix you will find some of the best beaches and many
good snorkeling spots on the Northshore and on the sought
after East Side of the island. These beaches are much less vi-
sited and you may have the beach for yourself! Christiansted
is the capital of St. Croix and has plenty of colonial buildings.
Fort Christiansvaern as well as the Danish Customs House
are worth visiting. Mid-island you will find the renowed Botani-
cal Garden which has a nice cactee selection and the Estate
Whim Plantation, which is a old sugar plantation. You may
visit the Great House and the windmill on the premisses.
One of the highlights on St. Croix is a day boat trip to the small
Buck Island Reef National Monument where you can swim
in cristal clear water and also snorkel. The corals found are one
of the world´s most beautiful!
