Both "green" islands give their visitors the impression of them
having a journey in the 18th century. You feel as if you send
back in the prosperous good old English times. Some planta-
tion houses bear witness to the past of tabacco and sugar
plantations. Nevis is regarded as an exclusive vacation desti-
nation!
St. Kitts was the very first island in the Caribbean which was
populated right from the beginning. The foothills of the moun-
tains dominate the whole island and stretch up to the coast
and the green vegetation here is a mixture of meadows and
tropical dense forest. The beaches are splendid and excep-
tionally brown. Basseterre is the capital city with a popula-
tion of 18,000 and is extremly appealing. The center has many
colored Caribbean houses of stone and wood. Worth visiting
places are the St. George´s Church and the Pall Mall Square
with its Georgian houses. The most popular beach is the long
Frigate Bay, which is ideal for watersports. One street runs
around the island and therefore invites for a round-trip. On fa-
mous Brimstone Hill in 1690 a fortification was errected, which
is now known as "Gibraltar of the Caribbean". In 1782 a big sea
battle took place in which the English defeated the French and
therefore obtained the supremacy on St. Kitts.
The island Nevis is circular and mainly consist of the volcano
Nevis Peak whose peak is 985m high. The sister island St.
Kitts lies at a distance of 3km and is easily reached by ferry.
Nevis is very green and boasts some splendid brown beaches.
Pinney´s Beach is the best of Nevis and from here you have a
commanding view of St. Kitts. The only city is Charlestown
with a few streets. Worth visiting places are the birth house of
Alexander Hamilton and the most well-known plantation house
of the Caribbean, the Nisbet Plantation, which is serving as a
luxurious hotel today.
On both islands there is a possibility for tourists to stay in
some wonderful plantation houses. Many of them are conver-
ted into hotels but usually at higher rates. These hotels are the
perfect place for a Caribbean honeymoon!
