Puerto Rico has a lot to offer: stylish colonial buildings, variety of nature and splendid beaches. The island is a lovely mixture of Latin culture and American way of live. Puerto Rico is very mountainous and the Cordillera Central dominates many parts of the island. The flora and fauna is distinctive and in the National Park El Yunque you will find over 30 different sort of wild orchids, 500 ferns and 300 spe- cies of trees. The capital is San Juan and the most worth visi- ting part is Old San Juan. The whole town center is under he- ritage by UNESCO and has many colonial buildings with co- lored walls and iron balconies. In the extreme tip of the old city lies the Castillo San Felipe el Morro, which was the most important military base of the Spanish colonial time. The Casa Blanca was the headquarter of the family of Juan Ponce Léon and dates back to 1523. Worth visiting places include al- so the Cathedral which foundation dates back to the 16th cen- tury, the Capitolio and the Plaza de Colon. The tourist areas of the island are the district Condado and the Isla Verde, where many modern hotels are built. The bea- ches and bays are frequently visited, but good. Around 50km outside San Juan you find the best beach of Puerto Rico, the Playa de Luquilo. Puerto Rico is also well-known for its breathtaking underwater world. Around the island you will find many reefs which are ideal for snorkelling or diving. In the south of Puerto Rico lies Ponce, which is also a great colo- nial city. Worth visiting places are the Cathedral, the Plaza Central and the Museo de Arte. The islands of Vieques and Culebra are part of Puerto Rico and attract tourist as well. Geologically they belong to the Vir- gin Islands and you will find great beaches. A large part of the island of Vieques is however US Army territory. |
