The Dominican Republic has become very popular in the last
years and deemed to be the "all inclusive" destination in the
Caribbean. It is very likely that you will have a package vaca-
tion as you will find many large and comfortable resorts.
Apart from that the island has much more to offer. Spanish
culture, historical buildings, marvelous beaches and very
lively and friendly people.
The tourist areas are Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete and
Samaná. A trip to the surrounding areas as well as the ca-
pital Santo Domingo is something that should not be mis-
sed. Cabarete has some miles long sand beaches and is po-
pular among surfers. In Puerto Plata and Sosua you will find
most hotels but on the Samaná Peninsula you still have some
beaches for yourself.
Santo Domingo has many colonial buildings which are real-
ly magnificient and worth visiting. This is the oldest city of the
New World and was founded by the brother of Christoph Colum-
bus around 1500. Sights not to be missed are the Alcazar de
Colón, the former headquarter of the spanish crown in the
new world; the Catedral de Santa Maria la Menor, which is
the oldest church of the New World and the Museo de las Ca-
sas Reales, a museum that presents the Spanish colonial his-
tory. In the vicinity of Santo Domingo lies the artist village Alt-
os de Chavón, which is built like a small colonial village.
When you drive from Santo Domingo towards east you´ll arrive
at Boca Chica, the most favourite beach of the Santo Domin-
gons themselves. Specially at the weekends it can get really,
really busy. However still you can have some nice time there
and stay at a good beach hotel. If you do have some time than
it is really worth taking a round-trip. Make sure that a trip inclu-
des the capital Santo Domingo, the beautiful landscape of the
Cordillera Central, the second important city Santiago and
the villages of the north coast.
